Mountjoy Street Forum on Tuesday night where the issues were burglaries, finding of syringes on streets and how to dispose of them.
Very productive meeting that raised many concerns of residents that were addressed and discussed. In relation to the problem of burglaries it is important to remember the three keys to deterring burglars; security, visibility and cooperation, firstly It is important to keep your home secured, do not leave window and doors open or inviting to criminals, do not leave keys under mat or in anyway make things accessible for burglars. Secondly be visible of all suspicious behaviour in your area, if you feel anyone or groups are acting suspiciously do not hesitate to contact your local Garda station…it is better to be safe then sorry! Thirdly be engaged with your community, talk to neighbours, have trusted friends and family call to your house when on to turn on/off lights at intervals if you are on holiday for example. Be there for elderly neighbours who can be particularity susceptible to crime. In terms of finding syringes on the street it is important to never touch a syringe with your bare hand and keep children away from the area, phone Dublin City Council 24 hour line on (01)6796186 or phone my office on (01) 6183488 for advice.
