I have an alarming number of calls coming in from individuals and families, on rent allowance, having their rent, unfairly and disproportionately, increased by landlords and in no situation to be able to pay the increase. They are now facing eviction followed by homelessness or moving back to the family home which can cause further distress and pressure. Imagine a family of 2 adults with 2 children moving back into the family home into 1 bedroom, a family home already crowded.
Is no one from the Department looking at the sites and seeing the rents that are in operation now? Rent allowance is not being accepted by many landlords and rent allowance is not sufficient to cover the accommodation currently on offer.
